MISSION STATEMENT
It is the mission of sweetgrasscentral.com to support and promote the Sweetgrass basket weavers of Mt. Pleasant and Charleston, SC by making available, through this website, the history, the biography and the works of art created by these artisans. Sweetgrasscentral.com is also dedicated to supporting the causes and organizations that have a direct and positive impact on the preservation of this cultural treasure.
ABOUT SWEETGRASSCENTRAL.COM
While living in Mt. Pleasant several years ago, I drove by the weather-beaten 2 x 4 stands of the Sweetgrass basket weavers everyday. During the summer months I often saw cars from out of town stopped precariously along the side of the road and the tourist casually shopping and negotiating for the hand made baskets the weavers had displayed. I also noticed that tourist traffic dropped dramatically during the winter months. It was then that I came up with the idea sweetgrasscentral.com; this site is designed to be offered completely free of charge to the weavers so as not to add any additional financial burden to the artist. It was also designed to provide year round support and availability to their wonderful baskets. Not everyone can “run down” to Charleston to pick up a basket and now they don’t have to. I also would like to let more people around the world know about these wonderfully unique works of art. It’s not often that we have the chance to own a piece of history.
